1833 Whatman watermark, original linen backing. Some light wear and

A
fascinating Bradford County document recording the division of 10,000 plus
acres of land from the extensive holdings of Richard and Mary Caton of
Maryland. Mary Caton, daughter of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of
the Declaration of Independence, and husband Richard acquired massive
tracts in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia with funding from Charles
Carroll. The majority of plats shown are allotted to daughters, Lady
Stafford (Elizabeth Caton) and the Duchess of Leeds (Louise Caton). A fine
view of the early development of Bradford County, professionally drawn and
colored.

[Manuscript Archive] Pennsylvania Anthracite Region. Pen, ink and
watercolor on paper and linen, various sizes though mostly 20” x 30” or
larger, 1818 – 1877, Condition varies but mostly very good to nearly fine
overall. $14,000.00
A striking collection of twelve manuscript county and township maps
recording in superb detail the birth of the great anthracite coal boom
that fueled the American Industrial Revolution.. Two maps record the
efforts of John Dreher which were undoubtedly used in the construction of
Samuel Fishers monument 1836 Map of the First and Second Anthracite
Fields.( See Item C21.6). John Dreher was an engineer and surveyor,
and aided in developing the great coal fields of Schuylkill and also in
settling the early land titles relative to many local estates. - Munsell

Pennsylvania, Constructed from the County Surveys authorized by the STATE;
and other original Documents by John Melish. Phila., Benjamin Tanner,
1822/1826. Linen backed wall map on rods, six joined sheets, engraving
with outline color, 49” x 73”. Edges a bit ragged, few very minor losses
at top, upper right corner repaired with discrete waterstain, bright
color, very good or better overall. $9,500.00

Fisher, Samuel B. Map of the First And Second Anthracite Coal Fields.
Samuel B. Fisher, Pottsville, 1836. First edition, 32 segments on
original linen with marbled outer panels, lithograph with outline color,
45” x 86”. Some toning and soiling, several folds reinforced on verso
with modern linen tape, overall nearly fine or better. Not in Phillips
Maps, Marcou or Eberstadt. $3,200.00
An extraordinary example of early 19th century regional
industrial cartography and likely the first American work of its kind in
both subject and scope. Fisher’s monumental map became the basis for many
subsequent editions through to the 20th century with three
copies of this first edition being located.

[Manuscript, Untitled] Township of Willksbarr [sic] and Vicinity.
Anon, n.d. but c.1800-1802. Four joined sheets on linen, pen, ink and
watercolor on mould-made paper, 40.5” x 30.5”. Some staining and light
browning, few small losses, overall very good or better.A document of
fascinating historical significance concerning Wilkes-Barre, PA and
surrounding areas of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties. $7,500.00
In 1666 King Charles II granted charter to the Connecticut colony to
certain lands in America including the Wyoming Valley Pennsylvania.
Ironically, King Charles II also granted charter in 1681 of Wyoming Valley
lands to William Penn as repayment of royal debt to Penn’s father which
included the Manor of Stoke and the Manor of Sunbury resulting in
overlapping of lands between the two charters.

Fourth Of July Centennial Anniversary / New and Improved Map of the City
of Philadelphia Showing Fairmount Park With Its Drives And Walks, Wards,
Public Squares & Cemeteries, &c, &c. Phila., T. R. Callender & Co.,
1872 / 1876. Broadsheet, lithograph with wash color, 38” x 27”. Backed
with Japan tissue, few small holes filled, soft creases, overall very
good. Not in Phillips Maps or Simonetti. $450.00
A large illustrated “Centennial Edition” of Stoifier’s excellent map of
Philadelphia, colored by ward and public lands and lithographed by H.J.
Toudy. Shows Philadelphia and surrounding boroughs with vignettes of
Independence Hall, Old State House 1776, View Up the
Schuylkill River, Union League House and Hemlock Glen on
the Wissahickon [creek]. Typical of large ephemeral maps, few copies
of this edition seem to have survived as only a copy at the Library
Company of Philadelphia has thus far been found. Incidentally, only a few
Philadelphia maps by Stoifier / Callender are recorded between 1872 and
1884

C., Map Of The Oil District Venango, Crawford & Warren Counties
Pennsylvania. Buffalo, J.Sage & Sons, 1860. Small 4to, blind and
gilt stamped cloth, folding lithographed map, 28.5” x 44.5”. Covers fine,
map backed with Japan tissue closing a few fold separations, several light
stains along folds from early cello tape, overall very good. Not in
Phillips Maps, Streeter, Eberstadt, Graff, Simonetti, Marcou or
Hazen & Hazen. $16,500.0
Surveyed and drawn by Charles Smith of Ohio and lithographed by the
Buffalo firm of J. Sage & Sons. Map is comprised of three irregular
sections, keyed to each other, forming a strip map of Oil Creek and East
Branch Oil Creek to the confluence of the Allegheny River and executed on
a scale of 1,200 feet per inch.

Finley, Anthony, Map of
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware
Constructed from the Latest Authorities.
Phila., Anthony Finley, c.1825. 16mo, full roan titled in gilt, fully
colored engraved map on bank paper, 17” x 21.5”. Covers a little worn,
few folds reinforced on verso, few minor spots, bright color, about nearly
fine overall. Not in Phillips, Modelski or Simonetti. $575.00
Undated first issue of Finley’s fine regional map which would accompany
his American Atlas in 1826. Very nicely colored by county with population
table and only the proposed D&C Canal in Delaware and the
Rariton and Morris Canal in New Jersey appearing as commercial
transportation routes.
