C21.14  Bufford, J.H.  Plan of Lagoon Heights, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.  Boston, J.H. Bufford, ,1873. Tinted lithograph, 25.7” x 34”. Fine condition.  $550.00
An exceptional real estate promotional for this planned community offering 949 building lots on prestigious Martha’s Vineyard, lithographed by J.H. Bufford.
James Bufford’s mastery of the art of lithography is here very well displayed, most notably in the vignettes. A pastoral view of the Lagoon appears in a vertical format along the left margin and is accompanied by two wonderful displays of Victorian architecture, each complete with happy homeowners.  The depth and clarity of lithography is quite remarkable and most unusual for such an ephemeral item.  Of  Bufford’s work, Harry Peters writes – “his importance can be seen, and his contribution to Americana is in the first rank”.  Bufford worked for Nathaniel Currier in New York and later at his own Boston establishment had as an apprentice the great American genre painter Winslow Homer.

All in all a fine lithograph by William Burford targeting potential New York State carriage buyers, compliments of the H.A. Odell firm then of Edmonton, NY.
Quite nicely illustrated with two carriage examples and a birds-eye-view  of the Parry production facility located in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Shows also an inset map of Long Island. This example very clean and well preserved maintaining the original rods.  An attractive example of Victorian promotional advertising employing cartography as a visual medium.

Rare Early Map of the Canada Oil Fields

C21.22  Ellis, John Jr.,  Ellis’ New Map of the Canada Oil Lands, Pocket Edition.  Toronto, J. Ellis, 1866.  16mo, oblong stiff blue printed wraps, folding lithographed map, 24” x 17”.  Covers and map clean and crisp, about fine.  Not in Phillips Maps, Eberstadt, Streeter, Marcou, Hazen & Hazen or TPL Bibliography of Canadiana.  John Ellis Jr. not listed in Tooley Dictionary.  $800.00
A most interesting and important early sectional map of the Canadian oil region in Ontario centered on Oil Springs P.O. where petroleum is claimed to have been struck in 1858.  This revised edition was likely issued by Ellis in response to the oil boom at Petrolia in 1865.
An 1865 advertisement for Ellis’ maps indicate the “pocket edition” was issued to provide ready reference, showing the whole of the County of Lambton, the principal oil district and taken from his larger Complete Map of the Canada Oil Lands also issued in 1865.  This map like the larger issue constructed on a scale of 200 chains per inch.  A single copy of Ellis’ large map located at McMaster University Library, no copies of this “pocket edition” located. Quite rare.
